Lisa Hazlett started playing piano in second grade and clarinet in
fourth grade in Webster, New York. She continued to study both in
Trumbull, Connecticut and found music to be her love her freshman year
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was active in high school bands,
playing in North Allegheny's Marching 300 Tiger Band, Concert Band, Wind
Ensemble, Pit Orchestra, German Band, Pep Band and NA's All-Purpose
Ensemble (APE Band). She was awarded The Louis Armstrong Jazz Award her
senior year.
Ms. Hazlett graduated Magna Cum Laude from Slippery Rock University with
two Bachelor of Science Degrees in Music Education and Music Therapy. At
SRU, she was drum major of the marching band, secretary for the
Mid-Atlantic Region of Music Therapy Students, and won the SRU Student
Conductor's Competition. She was principal clarinetist of the Symphonic
Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band and Dixieland Band. During her
years at SRU, she served the marching band as president and secretary,
the Music Therapy Club as secretary, and Mu Phi Epsilon as president and
vice president. She taught clarinet privately while at SRU and at Johntonbaugh's Music Center in
Gibsonia, Pennsylvania.
She was a Board-Certified Music Therapist at the
Matheny School and Hospital in New Jersey and worked to enhance the
lives of clients with Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy
and Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome. Ms. Hazlett collaborated with physical
therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, recreation
therapists, physicians and special educators. She worked as a Private Practice Contract
Music
Therapist at the Allegro School in Cedar Knolls, New Jersey and served
children with
autism. She performed with the Bound Brook Orchestra which she
conducted for a season, Grace Fellowship Handbell Choir and performed in
local pit orchestras each spring.
A Board-Certified Music
Therapist, Ms. Hazlett
served students in seven elementary schools the Austin (Texas)
Independent School District with physical, emotional and behavioral
disabilities in
self-contained classrooms. She performed with the Austin Civic Wind
Ensemble, Austin Chamber Winds and taught clarinet lessons to students
in three school districts each week.
Ms. Hazlett was the Fine Arts Department Head
and Band Director at Pine Castle Christian Academy in Orlando for six
years and turned a band program with just 12 student in grades 6-12 into
one with over 100 students and earned Superior Ratings at each
adjudication.
She is a member of Mu Phi Epsilon, Mu Kappa Gamma,
WVEA, NAfME and WVMEA. In Jefferson County Schools, Ms. Hazlett worked
one year at
Shepherdstown Middle School and was Washington High School's
Assistant Band Director when it opened its doors in 2008. She has been Washington High School's Band Director since September 2019 and
she teaches beginning guitar, concert band, marching band and jazz
band. Lisa is blessed to live in
Charles Town, West Virginia with her awesome sons, Patrick, Parker and
Peyton.
